The Weather is a Fickle Friend…

Have you picked your wedding date because if the season? So many couples choose their wedding date because of the time of year it falls on, but I am going to let you in on a little secret… No matter if you get married in Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter you cannot guarentee the weather will be perfect, so don’t stress about it.

I met a couple today who were shocked that it was cold, misty and raining. She said to me “It is supposed to be summer, why is it so cold?” There is no guarentee with the weather, so below i have outlined the sterotypical weather assumptions and what really/usually happens at that time of year:

Spring

A time of new life and beautiful blooms. The smell of flowers in the air and beautiful, warm sunny days. However, Spring has rather a fickle side we don’t often remember… Just when you think you have her worked out she flicks the switch and you don’t know where you stand, or worse, she brings unwanted guests. Those pesky, early, uninvited afternoon winds who usually bring the rain with them. Don’t let them damoen your spirit, the most magical photos are almost always in the rain.

Summer

Hot 30°C+ days, sunblock and surf is what always comes to mind when we think of Summer, but did you know Summer is usually the wettest season? If you don’t mind the rain then there is nothing to worry about, but if you don’t like getting your hair wet, your shoes dirty or being harrassed by flies and mosquitos you may want to reconsider getting married in Summer. If you are looking to have a tropical wedding in particular, Northern Australia is generally experiencing the build up or monsoon season, so best to avoid December through till February if you want to keep your feet dry.

Autumn

Generally a well behaved time of year. Autumn brings with it the brilliant colours, cool change and earlier evenings. Even though it is more predictable and generally better behaved than the previous two season, Autumn will blow you around when it feels like it. Strong winds can make the perfect photos with the leaves flying through the air, but weren’t you wearing a veil?

Winter

You know where you stand with Winter. Winter does what it says it is going to do, no arguement, no fuss. Clear days, cool temperatures and an even temperament. It is going to be cold, but it’s Winter, you wouldn’t expect anything less. It may snow, how spectacular for photos! You can be guarenteed you won’t overheat, sweat, or be bugged by flies or mosquitos, and if the cool is a little too much for you you can always turn on a heater, light a fire or wrap yourself in a shawl; You can always find a compromise to make everyone happy in Winter.

Don’t get too hung up on getting married in a certain season because “The weather will be perfect”. There is no such thing. The weather is a fickle friend and the more you try to predict it the more it will let you down. The way to make sure you get the day you have dreamed of is to have a back-up plan. Have a marquee on standby, pack umbrellas, extra bobby puns and cans of hairspray. Have insect repellant available for all your guests along will bottles of water for them to drink. Be prepared for anything, especially if you are having an outdoor wedding, but don’t let it control your day.

Pick a date that is right for you. At the end of the day – rain, hail or shine, you are marrying your best friend; the one you want to spend the rest of your life with, and nothing else in the world matters.

Happy planning x
